In a nutshell, pool covers reduce evaporation by helping to block sun and trap moisture. Not only does this reduce the amount of water you need to refill your pool with by 35-50%, but also chemical usage. If helping the environment isn’t reason enough they tend to be great investments - often saving hundreds of dollars over the course of several years.

There are 2 kinds of pool covers:

​Traditional Pool Covers

Traditional pool covers are essentially sheets made from synthesized materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, or vinyl. This plastic-like blanket sits on top of your pool which will reduce the exposure of your pool to the elements, thus reducing evaporation.

They require a little bit of time to take on and off, but can save a lot of money in the long run. Additionally, they are also great for preventing debris from coming into your pool so you save time cleaning!

Typically, the cheap covers tend to be mediocre and a waste of money. With that in mind, you can check out this pool cover buying guide for advice on how to buy the right pool cover of this type for your pool.

​Liquid Pool Covers

Liquid Pool Covers such as HeatSavr and EcoSaver are a newer type of pool cover that work similarly. However, instead of being physical sheets it is instead dispersed from a bottle. You add the solution to your pool and the solution will form a thin layer on top of your pool, reducing evaporation and chlorine loss.

Liquid Pool Covers are great alternatives to traditional pool covers. Although they don’t protect your pool from debris, they are very easy use and require very little effort!

​Like all lights, pool lights also consume electricity. An easy win to getting your pool a little greener is by switching your pool lights to LED pool lights.  They not only cut electricity costs, but because they last 5x-6x longer than average pool lights, it also reduces the lights and materials that go to the waste!

​Automatic pool cleaners are great for a variety of reasons. Not only do they save you time in your pool maintenance endeavors, but they actually reduce the amount of electricity and energy you use, making these very eco friendly. A classic example of an automatic pool cleaner is the game changing Kreepy Krauly.

Although these consume some electricity as well, they ultimately result in using much less. This is because they require very little electricity compared to pool pumps and the other pool systems that clean your pool.

By using a pool cleaner you make these more electricity expensive units work less hard, ultimately making your whole pool system require less resources. Pressure pool cleaners are actually the greenest of the options, since they don’t use any extra electricity and still help clean your pool!

​Pool pumps are part of your external pool system and work to keep the water of your pool clean. They help move water through to your pool filter get rid of bacteria and debris in your pool.

Older pool pumps run all day and tend to use up a LOT of electricity. It’s a waste because pool pumps only need to be ran for a fraction of the day.

Variable speed pool pumps are great alternatives, and use up as low as 10% of electricity as traditional single or two speed pool pumps since they are timed instead of running 24/7.
However, there are more energy efficient one and two speed pumps available as well - they’re just not as good.

Be sure to double check what pool pump you are using. You don’t necessarily need a variable pool pump since they can be pricey, so at least consider greener, energy efficient one or two speed pumps to reduce your environmental impact.

I saved the best (and hardest to implement) for last. Natural pools are types of swimming pools that rely on natural systems to keep your pool clean.

Traditional pools use a lot of chemicals, mostly chlorine, to keep the pool sanitary and get rid of bacteria. Instead, natural pools utilize natural systems such as various plants to filter the water and keep it clean.

These are a tons of health benefits in addition to the environmental ones, but as far as this article is concerned this will cut your pool’s electricity and chemical usage down to 0.

You’ll still need to do some pool maintenance such as scrubbing the walls, steps, and perhaps vacuuming the floor, but natural pools are great alternatives to traditional chlorine pools and will truly minimize your environmental impact.

​It is everyone’s responsibility to do their best in being environmentally conscious. In this article we’ve outlined a lot of ways to make your pool greener. There's no reason that the fun and playful tone of summer has to disappear entirely just because our part of the Earth is tilting a little bit further from the sun. Just like there's no reason you have to deal with heat loss in your pool just because that's how evaporation works.

Time has a way of sneaking up on you. One moment you're happily browsing through your local rec center's spring/summer programming guide, thinking about the long and warm days ahead of you, and the next it's August, and the final days of summer extend only as far as a few short leaps on the calendar.

I know that it's only the second week of August, and that there's still lots of time for lazy days at the lake and lemonade on the porch. But in many places, including my own city, it's starting to cool down. For many reasons that's great. Fewer forest fires. The oncoming fall, when cozy sweaters and hot chocolate will fill in the hole that Summer's coconut sunscreen and blooming gardens left behind.

But for pool owners, the end of summer means something else: the end of pool season.
I have some good news for you, something that will help you extend your pool season and keep the last vestiges of the summer's heat in your pool: Heatsavr.

I read a great article last week about using Pokemon Go to attract people to your business. If your facility isn't close to a Pokestop or gym, there are still ways to get involved. You can advertise any rare Pokemon that your customers have caught on your grounds, or announce a discount for anyone who has the "Pokemon of the day." Set up a couple power strips around your snack bar and it could be a haven for players—and Pokemon training is hungry work!

Don't be afraid to get creative! There are dozens of ways to market this craze, and what works for one business may not work for another. At the end of the day, though, you're sure to have fun!

One of the most frequent questions we get here at the Liquid Pool Covers Head Office is in regards to unheated pools and whether or not using a liquid pool cover will be worth while. After all, a non-heated pool isn't consuming loads of energy (and therefore money), so what is the appeal?

Here's the honest truth, my friends:

Liquid pool covers have been proven to reduce overnight heat loss by about 50%. This is a big deal if you are not heating your pool, because it will allow you to keep your water warmer, for a longer period of time.

I have a 16 x 32 outdoor pool that is shaded the better part of the day. With that much shade, even in the Oklahoma weather I needed to heat the pool, and subsequently decrease heat loss. Even in 100+ degree weather, my pool would only get 82f. We wanted the pool to be a tropical 85f. Sooooo… I bought a heat pump and installed it. With a wonderful temperature of 85f, the biggest issue was heat loss. After the purchase: I needed to contact customer service with some questions and a minor issue. Using a liquid pool cover like Heatsavr is pretty much one of the easiest ways to cover your swimming pool.

Manual dosing requires pool owner or operator to do some very simple calculations to figure out the dosage rate, and a minute or two to actually pour the liquid into the swimming pool either daily or weekly. Not too difficult. 

There is also an option of installing an Automatic Metering System which will actually dose the Heatsavr into a pool each day automatically. After installing the system, all the pool owner / operator has to do is change the bottle when it gets empty, and a few simple annual maintenance tasks.

Just like most equipment, especially items that have moving parts, the HS115 Automatic Metering System does require a bit of TLC to maintain in optimal running order. The few annual maintenance issues can usually be taken care of in less than half an hour. If you are considering installing one of these systems and want to know what kind of "work" will be required of you, or if you already have one installed, here are some of the most common care-taking tasks:

The little screen on the Automatic Metering System is where the time of day is displayed on the metering system. Many people use this screen as an indicator of whether or not the system is operating properly, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Even if that screen stops working, the metering system may still function properly! 

The screen is actually powered by a coin battery, which is the more important piece of the puzzle. That coin battery holds the programming of the system in the case of a power outage, so that even if the pump loses power for a short period of time, you won't have to reprogram all the settings.

However, just like the battery in your watch, this coin battery will die after time. It is fairly simple and inexpensive to replace, luckily. 

The battery that you will need is the CR2330 or the BR2330, and you can pick this up at most RadioShack locations for less than $10.

Once you have a battery, you will want to disconnect the power to your HS115 Metering system, and take the front plate off by removing the 4 screws. The first thing you will want to do is then tighten the 4 screws inside the front plate, as sometimes the battery is not actually dead, but the connections are just a bit loose. If this fixes your problem, GREAT! If not, simply locate the coin battery, pop it out and replace it with your new one. The put the pump back together and the screen should work just fine.

You will have to reprogram your system now, but that is quite simple as well. You can find the programming directions on Page 7 of our Installation Manual: HS115 Installation and Programming Manual.

The HS115 is a peristaltic pump, which basically means there is a roller assembly that rotates, creating pressure around a flexible tube. As the pressure moves from one side of the tube to the other, the liquid also moves. This is how the liquid pool cover gets pulled from the bottle of Heatsavr and pushed through to the main return line.

Each installation kit that comes with the metering system has 2 Flex Tubes, and for subsequent years, you can order replacements for as little as about $12.

To replace the tube, all you have to do is press and turn the two black screws on the front of the pump, which will release the roller assembly. Loosen the small screw on the back, and remove the cover. The tube should pop out of the front cartridge easily, and will also remove the two white nuts attached to the tube. To put your new Flex Tube in, coat is first with the lubricant that is included, as this will help extend the life of the new tube. Then reverse your steps to put the roller assembly back together: snap in the flex tube, screw the cover back on, place the roller assembly back on the front of the pump and press and turn the two black nuts to secure it in place.

There are a lot of advantages to living in a top-floor apartment. First of all, I don't hear any noises from above me unless it's raining or hailing. Second of all, I can lie in bed and listen to it rain or hail. There is the troubling matter of what happens if I do hear something decidedly unnatural coming from the roof, but that's a scenario that I've elected to deal with if and when it comes.

The most obvious downside is the heat. Yesterday it was scorching out, and I came back home hoping to have a little R&R in my apartment—which had had the blinds closed all day, so should have been relatively cool. I walked into the Heart of Darkness. The thick, hot air crowded me in my entrance way. Dim light filtered in from thick canopy of trees above me. Or maybe it came from my living room curtains. I could hear the squawking of my neighbour's parrot, and in the distance the heavy beating of drums.

​All dramatics aside, being too hot where you're supposed to be cool sucks. I think the same can be said about being too cold when you're expecting to be warm. In that same vein, there's probably no worse feeling than overheating poolside, only to jump in and have the pool be too cold for comfort. Your pool should be refreshing, not freezing. Your options to keep it at a swimmable temperature, though, involve either a lot of money spent on a heater, or crossing your fingers and hoping for continuous sunshine to heat it up.
