Pool Opening Season Top Tips from Industry Professionals
by Monique Nelson & Guests on June 4th, 2016

This time of year is affectionately known as "opening season" within the pool industry. Memorial Day is often the unofficial sun sports commencement date, and swimming pools around the continent are open for business!

If you are a pool owner, chances are you have either set up an appointment with your preferred pool service professional and have pulled your bikinis and swim trunks out of storage by now. If you are more of a do-it-yourself type, I have collected some top tips from a few impressive professionals that should help create your own pool opening strategy.

Aquatic Energy Consulting's Wes Burdine - aka The Pool Guy -  works with commercial facilities across the USA to reduce the cost to operate their bodies of water.

His top 3 tips for opening season are:
  • Start early to beat the onslaught of algae growth
  • Add HeatSavr liquid solar pool cover early on the keep the heat gathered in the water from the warm sunny days from evaporating during the cool spring nights.
  • Speed up the flow of the pump to assist in circulation thus clearing the water.

Michelle from Rintoul's Pools and Spas of Wingham ON shared this hot advice with us:
  • Problems with birds cleaning their nests and dropping the waste in your pool? Line up a flock of derby ducks around the edge and the birds seem to find another place to drop their waste.
  • Put a pull tie on your skimmer basket for easy removal from the skimmer
  • HeatSavr allows you to get lazy in the summer with your solar blankets, use both to get the most out of your heater in the cold evenings spring and fall. EcoSavr works well in your fountain too!

Kasey LaRose and Derek Anderson at Sunplay teamed up to create these great tips:
  • Be sure to check each piece of pool equipment thoroughly when opening your pool. Many pool owners will do just enough to get the pool up and running and then a week later the pool will be green.
  • Check for air and water leaks, which can often occur in old plumbing, loose silicone, or loose fittings.
  • If your pool uses a salt chlorinator, make sure the pool is set to the right temperature and has the right amount of salt to produce chlorine. Otherwise, you may end up with a cloudy, green pool.
If you are in the gorgeous state of Utah and would like to get in touch with Derek or any of the other fine staff at Sunplay, you can take a trip down to their store to say "hi":
